Sight Folder: Pub 229 Workbook — Privacy Policy
Effective date: 2026-11-06, for Sight Folder 1.0.0 and later, the versions that sell Sight Folder Pro through Google Play and, on iPhone and iPad, through the App Store. This covers Sight Folder for Android (on Google Play as com.chibuapps.sightfolder), Sight Folder for iPhone and iPad (on the App Store), and Sight Folder used in a web browser.
The short version
- Sight Folder keeps your sights on your phone. It has no account and no sign-in, and never asks for your name, an email address or a password.
- What you type is never sent anywhere by the app: not your sights, not your drill record, not your settings. Your phone's own backup may include them (see Android's own backup and iCloud Backup, below).
- There are no ads, no usage tracking and no crash reporting.
- Sight Folder Pro is sold as a yearly or a monthly subscription through Google Play, and on iPhone and iPad through the App Store. To know whether you own it, the app asks RevenueCat, the app's billing service, soon after it starts. That sends RevenueCat a random app user ID and basic app and device details even if you never buy (on iPhone and iPad, also Apple's identifier for vendor); if you buy, your purchase goes too. See Purchases, below.
- The app does not ask for permission to send notifications, and it does not use your location, camera, microphone or contacts.
The rest of this page says the same thing in more detail, so you can check it.
What the app stores, and where
Everything the app remembers is kept in your device's own local storage for the app. The app sends none of it to us or to anyone else. It is:
- Your sights. The entries you type into the work form (LHA, declination, latitude, and Ho if you enter it), the lines the app works from them, and the sights you save to your Sight Folder.
- Your drill progress. The drill in progress, and for up to your last 40 drills which lines differed from the table, so the next practice sight can exercise that line. It is stored as line types, not as a score. If Sight Folder Pro ends, this record stays readable.
- Your settings. Display preferences such as the theme, the hemisphere a new sight starts in, and whether the Ho and intercept rows show.
- Where you left off. A sight in progress, the last table page and Line Explainer line you opened, and an Undo for a sight you just deleted, so nothing is lost if the app closes.
- A simple launch count. How many times and on how many days the app has been opened, the first and last dates, and whether you have dismissed the invitation to install it. This is used only by the app itself, on your device. It is never sent anywhere.
- What the store last said you own, and the free week. The answer RevenueCat last gave about your purchase, so the app knows what you own when there is no signal, and, if you start the free week on Android, the date it started. Both stay on the phone, and neither is part of a folder file you save.
The app also keeps a copy of its own files (the pages and table data it needs) on your device so that it works fully offline, including in airplane mode.
Android's own backup
The Android app allows Android's device backup. If you have backup turned on in your phone's settings, Android may include the app's storage, and so your saved sights, in the backup it keeps in your Google account. That copy is made by Android under Google's terms, between your phone and your Google account. We never receive it. Whether restoring such a backup brings your folder back has not been tested, so do not rely on it.
iCloud Backup, on iPhone and iPad
If iCloud Backup is on, iOS may include the app's storage, and so your saved sights, in that backup, as it does for most apps, and may put it back if you restore your iPhone or iPad. That copy is kept in your iCloud account under Apple's terms, and you manage it in your device's iCloud settings. A backup of your iPhone or iPad to a computer may include it too. We never receive either copy. Whether restoring such a backup brings your folder back has not been tested, so do not rely on it.
Saving, sharing and deleting your information
- In the Android app, and the iPhone and iPad app, you can add sights from a folder file you saved earlier. Saving the folder as a file and sharing a round are not in these apps yet; an update will add them.
- In a web browser Settings can also save your Sight Folder as a JSON file on your device, and the Sight Folder can share a round of sights as plain text through the share sheet, or save it as a text file. You choose where any of it goes.
- Clearing. Settings has a "Clear the folder" action, with a confirmation, that removes your saved sights.
- Removing everything. Uninstalling the app (on iPhone and iPad, deleting it), or on Android clearing the app's storage in your phone's settings (or clearing site data for the web version in your browser), removes everything the app has stored on the device. A copy in Android's own backup, if you have one, is managed from your Google account, and a copy in iCloud Backup from your iCloud settings (a backup to a computer, on that computer). Because we hold no copy of your sights, we cannot restore them afterwards.
Purchases
Sight Folder Pro (Exam Drill's practice sights after the worked examples, Check my own sight and the drill record) is sold as a yearly or a monthly subscription through Google Play, and on iPhone and iPad through the App Store. If you buy it, the purchase is made in Google Play, or in the App Store on iPhone and iPad, and Sight Folder uses RevenueCat (RevenueCat, Inc.), its billing service, to know what your store account owns.
Exactly what leaves your phone, and who receives it. Sight Folder asks RevenueCat what this install owns soon after it starts (each time it shows a screen that needs to know), whether or not you ever buy, and again when you buy or restore:
- RevenueCat receives, over an encrypted connection:
- a random app user ID that RevenueCat's code creates on this install the first time the app asks what you own (it is not your name, email, Google account, Apple Account or any device identifier);
- only if you buy or restore, the purchase: the purchase token Google Play issued (on iPhone and iPad, the App Store's transaction), the product ID, its price and currency, whether it was a restore, and from then on the dates, trial and renewal state that RevenueCat reads back from Google Play or the App Store;
- with every request, the app and device details any app sends: the app's package name and version, RevenueCat's code version, the Google Play Billing Library version, the Android version number, the phone's brand and model, the phone's and the app's language, the store country, and whether the app is open or in the background (on iPhone and iPad, the iOS version and the device's model in place of the Android details);
- your IP address, as with any internet connection. Sight Folder does not use it to find where you are;
- on iPhone and iPad only, with every request, Apple's identifier for vendor: a random ID iOS gives one developer's apps on a device, which resets when all of that developer's apps are removed. RevenueCat's iOS code sends it to run the purchase. It is not your name, your Apple Account or the advertising identifier, and it is not used for tracking. The Android app sends no device identifier.
- RevenueCat does not receive your name, email address, payment details, advertising ID or Android ID, or anything you type in Sight Folder: no sight, no line, no drill record. (In the Android app its code collects device identifiers only when an app sets an advertising-attribution ID, and Sight Folder sets none; on iPhone and iPad the one device identifier it sends is the identifier for vendor, above. Its diagnostics reporting is off.)
- Google Play receives the purchase itself, on its own screens: your Google account, the payment method, the item, the price and the order. Google's billing library on your phone may also send Google technical information about the purchase flow. All of that is governed by Google's privacy policy, not this one, and Sight Folder never sees your payment details.
- Apple receives, on iPhone and iPad, the purchase itself, on its own purchase sheet: your Apple Account, its payment method, the item, the price and the date. That is governed by Apple's privacy policy, not this one, and Sight Folder never sees your payment details.
RevenueCat uses all of this only to tell Sight Folder what you own, on this phone and when you restore on another, and to show the developer sales totals. It processes it on the developer's behalf, as a service provider. RevenueCat's privacy policy: https://www.revenuecat.com/privacy
The free week. On Android, when you start it, Sight Folder keeps the date it started in its own storage on this phone. It is not part of a folder file you save, and starting, running or ending it sends no data anywhere and asks neither Google Play nor RevenueCat.
On iPhone and iPad the free week is Apple's 1-week free trial of the yearly subscription, for new subscribers. Starting it is a purchase in the App Store, which reaches Apple and RevenueCat as described above, and the yearly price is charged to your Apple Account when the week ends unless you cancel at least 24 hours before it ends. There is no free week of the app's own on iPhone and iPad.
RevenueCat keeps the purchase record, and the app user ID and details each install sends (an install that never buys included), for as long as Sight Folder uses them to know what you own, unless you ask for them to be deleted sooner. To have them deleted, email support@chibuapps.com (the developer contact address on Sight Folder's Google Play listing, for the iPhone and iPad app too); if you bought, include the order number from your Google Play or Apple receipt, so the record can be found. It will be deleted in RevenueCat. Google keeps its own record of the payment under Google's privacy policy, and Apple, for a purchase on iPhone or iPad, under Apple's.
In a web browser Sight Folder sells nothing and does not contact RevenueCat.
Permissions
Sight Folder never shows a permission prompt, on Android or on iPhone and iPad. On Android, the permissions it declares are:
| Permission | Why |
|---|---|
Internet (INTERNET) | Declared by the app wrapper Sight Folder runs in, and used by the store connection described under Purchases: Google Play's and RevenueCat's own code, not the app's screens. The app's own security policy lets its pages load only the app's own files, so they cannot connect to any other server. |
Google Play billing (com.android.vending.BILLING) | Lets Google Play take a purchase of Sight Folder Pro. Declared by Google Play's billing library. It does not show a prompt. |
Network state (ACCESS_NETWORK_STATE) | Declared by RevenueCat's SDK, to know whether it can reach the network. It does not show a prompt. |
On iPhone and iPad, Sight Folder asks for no permission: not your location, notifications, camera, photos or contacts. It never asks for permission to track you, and has no advertising identifier to give.
What Sight Folder does not do
- No account, sign-in, cloud sync or server of ours. There is nothing to sign up for.
- No ads and no usage tracking: no advertising, attribution or crash-reporting software, and no advertising ID.
- No location, camera, microphone, contacts or photos. The latitude on the form is one you type.
- No notifications. This version does not ask for notification permission and has no reminders.
- Apart from our own code, the app is built on React (the code that draws the screens) and Capacitor (the wrapper that turns it into an Android app and an iPhone and iPad app, with its App plugin, which passes the phone's Back key to the app on Android), and, for purchases, RevenueCat's SDK and Google Play's billing library (on iPhone and iPad, Apple's StoreKit), described under Purchases. None of them sends your sights anywhere.
What the stores see
If you download Sight Folder from Google Play, Google knows that your Google account installed it, as it does for every app, under Google's own privacy policy. Google shows us figures for the app as a whole, such as install counts and ratings, any review you choose to post, and, if you have allowed your phone to share usage and diagnostics with Google, crash and performance reports that Google collects itself (these describe the phone, such as its model and Android version, not your sights). Sight Folder adds nothing to what Google collects.
If you download Sight Folder from the App Store on iPhone or iPad, Apple handles the download and knows that your Apple Account installed the app, as it does for every app, under Apple's own privacy policy. Apple shows us figures for the app as a whole, such as downloads and ratings, any review you choose to post, and, if you have chosen to share analytics with app developers in your device's settings, usage and crash figures that Apple collects itself and that do not identify you. Sight Folder adds nothing to what Apple collects. If you buy Sight Folder Pro there, Apple takes the payment and keeps its own record of it under Apple's privacy policy; Sight Folder never sees your payment details or your Apple Account.
If you use Sight Folder in a web browser, its files are delivered by a web server the way any web page is, and that server receives the ordinary technical details every browser sends with a request, such as an IP address and browser type. After the first visit the app runs from your browser's own storage. From then on it only asks that same server for newer copies of its own files, and it never sends your sights or anything about you.
App Store privacy answers
These are the answers the iPhone and iPad app gives in App Store Connect's App Privacy section, with Sight Folder Pro on sale through RevenueCat. They follow RevenueCat's App Privacy guidance for the iOS code this version ships.
| Section of Apple's label | Answer |
|---|---|
| Data Used to Track You | None |
| Data Linked to You | None |
| Data Not Linked to You | Purchases: Purchase History (App Functionality, Analytics). Identifiers: User ID, meaning RevenueCat's random app user ID, and Device ID, meaning Apple's identifier for vendor (both App Functionality) |
Sight Folder asks for no contact details and no location, and everything you type stays on the device, so Contact Info, Location, User Content and Usage Data are not collected.
Children
The app is a study and working aid for celestial navigation. It is not directed at children. It asks no one, children included, for a name, an email, an age or any contact details. The only data about anyone that the app sends is what Purchases describes.
Changes to this policy
If a future version of Sight Folder changes anything on this page, this policy will be updated before that version is released, and the date at the top will change.
Contact
Questions about this policy or about the app: write to support@chibuapps.com, the developer contact email on Sight Folder's Google Play listing; it serves the iPhone and iPad app too. The developer is the one named on the Google Play and App Store listings.
This website
Everything above is about the app on your phone. This last part is about this website, chibuapps.com, which is a different thing.
- What it collects. Nothing. The pages are plain files: no form, no script, no cookie of ours, and no analytics of ours.
- Who serves it. Cloudflare. Like any web host, Cloudflare sees the IP address, the page requested, the time and the identification string your browser sends, in order to deliver the page, and handles that under its own privacy policy: cloudflare.com/privacypolicy.
