Ear Habit: Ear Training

Ear-training practice played on your phone, with a map of what you mix up.

For self-taught guitarists and other by-ear players who want to answer one question: what was the sound I just heard? Today’s practice is one tap from opening the app, and it leans towards the sounds you have been mixing up. Your streak and your practice days are counted on the phone.

Ear Habit's Today screen: today's practice, the streak and the most mixed-up pair, shown with example history.

Ten questions, scored fairly.

Each question plays a sound and offers a set of answer buttons. Replay it as often as you like. You are scored only on the button you pick: there is no clock, no countdown and no microphone.

The first time you open a level, a listen card lets you tap every answer and hear it before the quiz begins, so the first question is never the first time you hear a sound. The notes lesson sets the key with a short cadence first.

A practice question: the replay button and the answer choices.

When you miss, it shows why.

The answer screen names both sounds: the one you picked and the one that played. The Answer, Both and Yours buttons play them again, and nothing moves on until you tap.

On every note and interval answer it shows the notes with their frequencies and where they sit on a piano keyboard. A fifth above A4 at 440 Hz is E5 at 659.26 Hz, so you can check the answer key yourself.

The answer screen after a question: the verdict, the notes that played with their frequencies, where they sit on a piano keyboard, and the replay control.

A map of your mix-ups.

For intervals, chord quality and scales, the map counts what was played against what you answered over the last seven days or since you started, written as numbers in each square, not shown by colour alone. Once you have mixed up any two sounds, it names the pair you mix up most, with the count, in a plain sentence above the grid.

Tap a pair to hear both sounds one after the other, or practise only those two: ten questions of just that pair. Notes and progressions are practised and scored, but they do not have a map.

The confusion map: a grid of played against answered sounds, with counts in each square.

Five lessons, six levels each.

Notes, intervals, chord quality, progressions and scales, each with a lesson ladder. Levels 1 and 2 of all five are free; levels 3 to 6 come with Ear Habit Pro. A level is passed at 8 right out of 10, and you can open either level directly: you do not have to pass Level 1 to open Level 2.

The Lessons tab: the ladder of levels for each of the five lessons.

How the sounds are made.

Every sound is synthesised on your phone the moment you hear it, from the equal-tempered formula with A4 at 440 Hz. Nothing is downloaded and nothing is recorded, so the lessons play with no signal.

Choose the voice: plucked string (the default), piano-like, or a pure sine tone. Settings also offer letters or fixed do for note names, a normal or slow tempo, and a light or dark theme.

Settings: the instrument choice, note names, interval direction and tempo.

What it is not

It does not grade your singing, test rhythm or follow an exam syllabus, and it makes no promise about outcomes. There are no recorded instruments: the plucked string is a synthesised string, not a recording of a guitar. There is no sync between phones, no widget and no watch app, and the daily reminder needs the installed app.

Note spellings and chord and scale formulas are checked against tonal (MIT licence), credited in the app’s About screen.

No account, no ads

No sign-in, no email, no ads and no usage tracking. Your answers, your confusion map, your streak and your settings are kept on your phone, and Ear Habit sends none of it anywhere. If you buy Ear Habit Pro, Google Play and RevenueCat keep the purchase record, and the privacy policy says what it holds. If your Android phone backs up to your Google account, Android may include the app’s storage in that backup.

The daily reminder is off until you turn it on in Settings, and the app asks for permission to send notifications only when you turn it on, or when you set the one reminder before a free week ends.

Ear Habit Pro, a subscription through Google Play or the App Store, adds levels 3 to 6, practice sets you build and the confusion map over 30 and 90 days. Levels 1 and 2 of every lesson stay free.
